It implies the deep interconnectedness of all things. It conveys awe for the intricate and subtle way in which the universe is put together.”

- Carl Sagan (via expose-the-light)

"I think it’s fair in the current student loan discussion to point out that the timing is rather, um,..."

“I think it’s fair in the current student loan discussion to point out that the timing is rather, um, fortuitous. That is, the job market has soured enough that the people for whom opportunity was always a pretty hard slog (the three lower quintiles in terms of income or mobility, who haven’t had a real wage increase in 40 years) are no longer the only ones feeling the effects of a pretty much stagnant economy since 1970.

The upper two quintiles, numbering a lot of [brace yourself, everyone!] white, middle class and above kids, used to filing into positions that were by and large secure a generation ago (law, accounting, media, education with the prospect of tenure or unionized positions, etc.) are now looking at the world, like, well, everyone else. And since they are in position to publicize, they are (good for them!) — but the crisis has always been there. They just weren’t as inspired by it when it was only abstract.”

- From Ninety9, read the rest of it at the link. ● Copying of information is ethically right.
● Dissemination of information is ethically right.
● Copymixing is a sacred kind of copying, moreso than the perfect, digital copying, because it expands and enhances the existing wealth of information
● Copying or remixing information communicated by another person is seen as an act of respect and a strong expression of acceptance and Kopimistic faith.
● The internet is holy.
● Code is law.

RITUALS

Isak Gerson identifies the group’s central ritual practice as “kopyacting,” through which members “worship the value of information by copying it” (George 2012). This may take place in person, or over the Internet. The keyboard shortcuts for “Copy” and “Paste,” CTRL+C and CTRL+V, respectively, are considered sacred symbols within the church. The “Kopimi” emblem is also attributed great significance. A ‘K’ within a pyramid, its presence on the Internet indicates that the author allows and in fact encourages his or her material to be copied. Ibrahim Botani, a Kurdish émigré to Sweden, is credited with creating this “un-copyright logo” and was “a central figure in Piratbyrån” (Romig 2012). The simple act of copying information is regarded by Kopimists as a sacred and missionary activity.
”

- The Missionary Church of Kopimism (via neil-gaiman)

When I was a kid, Ghostbusters were just becoming passe and my...

When I was a kid, Ghostbusters were just becoming passe and my mom encouraged me to get into them so that she could get my toys from the thrift store, allowing her to thereby purchase more toys.

littleangrytiger:

Dear stupid motherfuckers playing dressup :
I’m buggin over the sheer amount of closet-racism on this website.
You wana be racist? Cool, I give no shits, just don’t deny it. Wusses deny it.
ಠ__ಠ chu ga lae, like I don’t see what you did there.

A sexist joke is still sexist; Being a joke doesn’t remove the actual content. It just tells the listener that while your statement is sexist, you may not be. Makes sense right?

A caricature portrayal of a race is a racist joke. It’s still racist.
Are you racist? Maybe, maybe not. But you did post a racist thing, make sense again? Denying that a thing is racist, then blaming anyone who finds it racist, as if they wronged you personally, is utterly ridiculous. It’s not just a dick move, it lacks an ounce of coherent logic, and does make you seem like a supremacist, sorry bro.

Let’s play FIND THAT LOGIC FLAW so that people can just.. be less annoying.

1. You can’t defend your right to free expression while demanding someone else be silent. That’s fucking stupid, come on now, you know it is. The right to criticize others is part of free speech, no one is threatening your free speech by using their own.

2. You literally have no ability to dictate how other people can or can’t feel about your expressions. By trying to, you are attempting to degrade or manipulate people into submission - See how that’s not ok? See how it’s supremacisty? Your concept of what I “should” feel does not trump my right to my own.

3. We aren’t challenging anyone’s free speech, as we aren’t actually telling these assmonkeys they “legally can’t” appropriate shit or be racist, we’re just saying they shouldn’t, because it’s a dick move (not the same as can’t) you can express and wear what you want, and we can hate you for poor choices.

4. Feminists : If you appropriate Native stuff with the excuse “in protest of patriarchy”.. Hate to break it to your ignorant ass, but most Native nations are matrilineal, we don’t have a patriarchy. Your point would be better made by wearing an Abe Lincoln hat.

5. and if you do it anyway, should have the decency and maturity to admit that it is, in fact, racist.. Rather than getting butthurt over the not-at-all-shocking fact that racist caricatures offend people.

over 9000. It isn’t honoring, appreciating, respecting, or harmless. If any of these words were applicable, we wouldn’t still be telling you to piss off. It’s not honor or appreciative because it’s inaccurate regurgitated stereotypes. It’s not respect because you seem to fucking hate and shun us when we are kind enough to offer authentic facts about our cultures. It’s not harmless because it dehumanizes and exotifies us.

“Sorry you were offended but I don’t think it should offend you” is not a valid response unless you are trying to express that you see me as inherently lesser than you.
Do you understand yet?

Agree with this but you can have matrilineal systems and still have a patriarchal society.

mynamekyle:

While it certainly looks as though someone has taken a great deal of paint to these hills, these colours in fact formed naturally.
This unique geological formation is known as the Zhangye Danxia landform, found in southern China. It was formed by sediments laid down in a low-elevation fault basin during the Cretaceous period, which then experienced uplift due to their position on top of various fault zones. The various colours are a result of the erosion of the thick-bedded red sandstone and conglomerate: from running water erosion, biological effect, chemical precipitation and organic staining.

Neanderthals lived and thrived in Europe for 250,000 years. Then humans showed up. Within 10,000 years, they were extinct. How did humans crowd them out, evolutionarily?

A new theory says that the beginnings of paleolithic dog domestication could have given early humans an edge:

Dogs would help humans to identify their prey; but they would also work, the theory goes, as beasts of burden — like the Blackfeet and Hidatsa of the American West, who bred large, strong dogs specifically for hauling strapped-on packs. (Paleolithic dogs were large: They had, their skeletons suggest, a body mass of at least 70 pounds and a shoulder height of at least 2 feet — which would make them, at minimum, the size of a modern-day German shepherd.) Since transporting animal carcasses is an energy-intensive task, getting dogs to do that work would mean that humans could concentrate their energy on more productive endeavors: hunting, gathering, reproducing.

(↬ The Atlantic)

Corn gone viral? You’re looking at an ear of a corn variety called “Glass Gem”, grown by Greg Schoen of Seeds Trust. This is real corn! How does it grow this way?

First you have to understand a few things about corn. Each corn kernel is actually a sort of unique plant. A corn plant’s male parts (the “tassels”) sit at the top of the stalk, and drop pollen downward. Unfertilized ears (the female parts) catch the pollen with the sticky ends of their corn silks. Each corn silk (I hate when that gets in my teeth) grabs a pollen grain, shuttles it allllllll the way down inside the ear, eventually creating one kernel for each pollen-silk-ovum combination. It’s one of the more interesting and inefficient breeding schemes I know of.

If you’ve taken genetics, you know that the parents’ genes will combine by chance, leading to certain ratios of inheritance in the offspring. This is the basis of Mendelian genetics (great Khan Academy video here).

With corn, we’ve simply carefully bred all the interestingness out of them. Native Americans were used to multi-colored corn, because corn plants held many varieties of color genes that could combine at random. Now all we are left with are one-color clones.

This “Glass Gem” corn is the other extreme of the spectrum, a combination of corn color hybrid genes and random pollination. It’s almost too pretty to eat!

cafeballad:

This reminds me of something! Eating well is pretty expensive

This morning I went to the supermarket to buy ingredients for my breakfast parfait (I eat them all the time). Green apples, greek yogurt, granola, honey. Three green apples were a little under 3 bucks, the greek yogurt was almost $7 (I buy it in a bulk size so I can get more for my money) honey was two bucks. I already had granola from Trader Joe’s

I live in a predominantly Asian suburb of the Bay, and healthier food is pretty accessible. There are plently of grocery stores and decent produce. I have bills but I don’t pay rent or mortgage, so I am at a point in my life where I can spend extra income on experimenting with new foods and brands. I consider myself lucky. But when I hit up bougie ass Palo Alto (where I work), it’s totally different. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are everywhere. There are restaurants that specialize in salad and shit. I love it, because it leads me to eat well on days where I’m too lazy to pack lunch, but I acknowledge the privilege

People need to stop fronting like eating a balanced diet is just as cheap and accessible as Taco Bell because that is a damn lie

There’s a new study floating around counter-acting the argument that eating healthier is more expensive. I can’t remember his name, but someone on NPR stated that it was flawed because of the scientific execution of the study (measuring by gram rather than by calories) and the fact that healthier foods cost more because it takes more to keep you full.

A big one I hear about too that usually gets left out/ignored by these studies is that healthy food usually takes more time to prepare because you’re cooking a whole meal from scratch rather than heating it in the microwave or whatever. This is problematic because time can be a more precious commodity if you have to juggle around not having a car (meaning every trip you take has the added time spent working with public transportation) or your pay is low enough that you have to work multiple jobs, or if you have some sort of disability that restricts your number of productive hours in the week, or… well, you get the idea.

(That said, I don’t know much about the specific study in question, so it could be he addressed that, I just know it goes unaddressed in a lot of “eating healthy’s super cheap!” articles and blogposts and whatnot I’ve read)

Racism 101: Are you a Racist?: White Privilege: Sure Why Not

Racism 101: Are you a Racist?: White Privilege: Sure Why Not:
racismschool:

Things I wish I could tell every White American:

“White Privilege” is not a slur or an insult

It is not derogatory

It is not something you can stop, start, eliminate or get more of

Acknowledging that you have it does not change anything

Denying that you have it does not change anything

Racism 101: Are you a Racist?: Ten Lies You are Told Every Single Day

Racism 101: Are you a Racist?: Ten Lies You are Told Every Single Day:
racismschool:

If you don’t physically hold someone down, you can’t be an oppressor.

Racism is physically hating and acting on that hate based on a person’s race.

White Privilege means you are rich and/or have an easy life.

Pointing out racism is a racist act.

Not knowing better is a perfectly justifiable reason to have hurt someone.

There is a specific way to be (insert race here)

White and whiteness are the same thing.

Anger is childish.

Using angry phrasing or curse words makes your point invalid.

It is my job to teach you but not your job to search for knowledge on your own.
